Of course, as long as the circuits are electrically correct, the cable will actually work. The problem is that the CAT5 cables have pairs of twisted wires. The twists are there to cancel out crosstalk. The longer the cable, the more likely you are to have crosstalk. If you make a cable for yourself, no problem. If you make a cable that gets worked on later, the sighted technician will end up fixing both ends.
