the problem is that i think the software has a fixed set of ports specified
and the one I need -- one of the half dozen or so on the list -- are
useless.

I'm not sure if the paralel port is going to be considered a par port, or if
it's just going to be a usb connection.
What you may have to do (and I'm not sure if it'll even handle it), is use
something similar to com0com to set up a fake par port that will link
directly to your usb connection, so that windows will recognize it. (not
windows exactly, but the embosser or the program you use). You may also be
able to just point the software at the device, and let the usb to par
connection do the work. If you go into your program you use for embossing,
do you even see the printer as an option? Does it show up under the usb
ports in the device manager?
