The problem here is that your windows 7 system is going to want to use home
groups, and windows xp doesn't have a clue what those
are.
Also, the name of your home group or workgroup, for that matter, affects
your security not at all. It's just as easy to attack a
workgroup called Zorro, than it is to attack one called mshome.

I have no idea how to revive your Seven system; good luck there. I will
explain what is needed though to get a network going.
I have my computers networked so that I can access shared folders on each
one, and the Linux box acts as my file server for
everything.
Basically all you need to do is set the workgroup to something (don't use
MSHOME or WORKGROUP), or anyone on your network can access
it, and I've seen some scripts ment to do damage hardcoded to one of the
two.
Then mark the folder as shared, (and I believe you can do the same with the
printer, as well).
