Thanks--especially since you've confirmed I'm not the only one seeking out a
remedy for those now many year old jaws selection problems. I especially
dislike the flaky copying jaws messages as they seem to be omnipresent in
all jaws updates and upgrades. In a few minutes when I come across this
problem, and yes, you're correct that indeed they do happen lots more in
Word than anywhere else, or maybe its because I do more copying and pasting
in word, I'm going to give your fix a try. It will be interesting to see if
it is faster than my current solution of simply unloading jaws when it conks
out and pop starting it again.
Thanks again,
Matthew

I use it when word starts getting slow and balky, and when, I have been
using a read all, to go over a section I have been working on, then I pause
and arrow key up and down over a couple lines with a blank space between
them, and jaws says the last line a second time instead of saying "blank"
when I hit the blank line.
another spot where I re-initialize the scripts is when I go to select
something and I hear nothing, and hitting control c says "nothing
selected", hit the combo and many times it will start functioning properly
again.
that key stroke works in many applications that have jaws scripts when it
starts getting a bit flaky on you.
the one place that it doesn't work in, is Internet Explorer 6, or at least
it doesn't report it, but I have rarely had troubles with IE 6 so haven't
done much with that command there.

Inthane,
Very interesting. How will I know when to fire off this command? What are
some symptoms?
Thanks for introducing me to a new keyboard command.
Matthew

in case it may help with this don't forget the {insert control escape}
keystroke that re-initializes the scripts.
I use that in word when it is handling a large document (I'm writing a
250 + page book for role playing games in it) and it starts misbehaving,
give it a try next time, maybe... it will help!
have a good one,

No, to be honest I never knew about that keystroke. Oddly, though, the
problem I talked about yesterday was not gone even after I restarted
the pc. I had to get rid of the second hard return between two right
braces and as soon as I did all was well. I remember this happening
occasionally in Dev C++ 4.9.9.2 as well but never as persistently.
Have a great day,
Alex

Have you also tried JAWSKey+Escape to refresh the screen?

That is part of the problem; there seems to be no common factor
at all, it just "decides" to do it every now and then. I will
let you know if I find something constant in this.

If you can find a sequence of steps that reproduces the problem,
that
would help me debug it. I suspect the cause is JAWS-related,
however,
since others have reported problems with the off screen model of
JAWS 9,
particularly in .NET-based applications.
So, if I can reproduce the problem and the cause is EdSharp, I
will fix
that; if the cause is JAWS, I will try to fix it via the scripts
distributed with EdSharp; and whether the latter case works as a
temporary
solution or not, I encourage folks to let Freedom Scientific
know.
Unfortunately, occasional oddities remain in JAWS support for
NET
applications, and the more we let FS know with specific examples,
the more
likely fixes will occur.
Regards,
Jamal

Subject: edSharp doing odd things with text
I have found that, using edSharp 2.6 on XP with jaws 9, I will
sometimes be told that text from one or two lines back has been
printed again. For example, a bit of code (unfinished) was:
s=in.next();
[hard return
However, edSharp told me that the s=... line had been put where
I wrote it and then again between the two right braces.
Arrowing
over the area in question one character at a time, between the
braces, revealed several "blank" characters and an s immediately
before the final right brace. Not only should that s=... line
not have been spoken a second time, but arrowing over it one
character at a time gave different text than did arrowing over
it
one line at a time. I have found that the only way to fix this
is to restart; alt-tabbing back to it and even closing both
EdSharp and Jaws does nothing.
Have a great day,
Alex
