Because of accessibility issues, pre-installed GNU/Linux distros aren't
the best course of action as they probably didn't test the various
combinations of screen reader/audio drivers/synthesizers which can make
for a truly arduous process to get it up and running and talking well
enough for a person with vision impairment to use successfully.
Recently, I bought the cheapest laptop available at Best Buy. It is an
Acer that cost something like $325. I made restore DVDs in case I wanted
to return it to Windows at some point. I fooled around with a few
different GNU/Linux distros and then Sina introduced me to vinux which
is really cool and highly accessible from the time you boot from the
"live" CD, install and run off of a hard disk.
You can check out vinux by downloading either the released version 2.1
based on Debian or the beta of 3.0 based on Ubuntu. Burn the download
to a DVD (it's an ISO image) and boot from your DVD drive. You can run
the "live" DVD image and check it out before you install it as the
primary OS on your computer.
