Your right as long as your in the BIOS your not on harddrive or any software used on it. You guys have to remember that the C MOS is not very big talking about kb not mb and only uses the basic of hardware. Sure it runs a test to see if harddrive is there and basic IO test for other device, but only gets response back not full run.

Something capturing the video output is what you want.
I think it was the old external decktalk or double talk. That could trap video out put. The only problem was you got once reed and no way to review. So ever move had to be sent to synth by print screen key. So far they have got the <http://www.google.com/hws//hws/search?br=&client=dell-usuk&channel=us-psp&safe=high&adsafe=high&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=diagnostics>diagnostic messages to speak on boot. Now the disk BIOS used by IBM and Compac aka JUNK. You could get into BIOS function from DOS. However, any changes made had to be reboot and if not excepted would go back to past settings. When they got rid of the BIOS on harddrive. It was for the best, because those boxes crashed every time you add or removed a part. You could try to get USB video output from it, but might not even see and only use on board video.

excuse me? the bios is a basic dos environment?
DOS stands for disk operating system and was developed by Microsoft. the BIOS (binary input output system) serves a totally different purpose, and is not part of DOS. When you power up your system, your computer looks for a bootable drive with a bootable sektor (which is denoted by two magic bytes: 0xAA55. From there, the bios can load the first sektor and execute it, which happens to be the bootloader. It is then the job of the bootloader to enable a20, enable protected mode as well as various other things, before it locates the operating system to boot and calls the entry point there, at which point your operating system (dos, windows, unix, bsd, etc) gets booted.

ah, no but the bios is a basic dos function, a unit in and of itself yes, precluding most other things, yes, but a basic dos functional environment,

O! you had a synth hooked up, so you were able to send output there. that works, sorry, I was thinking from your description you were in DOS.

well, it happened, to bad that computer got wrecked by some vandals folks I knew, *sigh*

your saying it can't work, but it did work, I have no clue how, if I could rerun that setup I would but I don't think the synthesizer is around anymore, even used, and I'm not sure if anyone has the other software, but I have herd the bios through jaws and I doubt it was JFW

Your right, because you are not even on the harddrive still in cmos.

what? jaws for dos (running under dos) could read the bios?
The bios is ran before the computer boots into dos, windows, linux, bsd, unix, whatever. You can interact with it's interupts if you are in real mode, but I don't see how it's possible to get to the bios that way.

hmmm, and it pops up again!

a long time back my first comp had windows 311, and then win 95,jaws 3.1, jaws for dos, and an external doubletalk lt synthesizer on it, and I found that I could read the bios when it was brought up from the jaws for dos and the synthesizer. seemed that the bios used the onboard autoexect.bat and/or the config.sys files when it booted or at least ran them since this is where the entries for the jaws for dos were kept back then, and I believe the synthesizer was as well.

you might try digging heavily into how the bios operates in newer computers and see what you can find out along those lines.

Hello all:
I will be getting a desktop in the near future and I want to be able to work my way through the bios and configure everything like I want (raid, etc). Have any of you found a way that can be used for someone across the net to work with you? I have a friend who said he would help, and I could point the webcam at the screen, but that's really hard if not impossible to read from the glow of the screen. Are there other solutions? I have a male - male VGA port setup. Could I possibly somehow set it up to stream the video from the computer to something that I could transmit across the net? this sounds like a cool little project, I'm just not sure where to begin. I'd think Linux would be a lot easier to write this for.
