Using Menu in jaws with visual basic

HI.
was wondering, is there an easier way, instead of having to use the route 
jaws cursur, to get to the type here menu and sub menu items, then how to 
align them side by side, or is there some code in the code editor.
just did an example for my programming class, and when i ran the ap, and hit 
the menu, one menu, file, help, then the about box and the exit menu item.
how does jaws read those and any other accessability settings, to have the 
menus side by side, and the sub menu items under that, there used to be a vb 
6 menu strip little app, which did that.
can any one help?
