In fact I don't think you need to download and install the JRE since the JDK 
also includes the JRE.
But I could be wrong here!
Java folks please correct me if I'm wrong here.

A text editor and the python interpreter.
For Java you need the JRE and SDK. 
I recommend to use EdSharp as the text editor:

I've heard that the Sun Java tutorial is good.
Do a google search for Sun Java tutorial and the chances are good it will be 
the first in the list of search results.
