I find that the verbosity problem of highly punctuated languages can be at least partially addressed via a screen reader toggle between reading with all or no punctuation. The JAWS scripts for VS2005 include a hot key to do this, JAWSKey+GraveAccent. So, if wanting to browse code without hearing each semicolon, parenthesis, etc., press that key, and then press it again to resume writing code or examining it in detail with full punctuation.
