Well yeah Linux does offer most all of their applications for free but
there are common apps between all operating systems such as web browsing
that will show how capable each of the built in screen readers are. Of
course though, no one hear wants to have to use Narrator because they know
when it comes to the web, it can do nothing. But is that Microsoft's
fault or the bigger screen readers not wanting to go out of business
because we all know that Microsoft in the beginning of Narrator did want
to create a quite capable screen reader. They of course did back down
though because the screen reader vendors were afraid it would put them out
of business. Hence we the consumer have had to suffer high prices and an
unfinished accessibility model for many years now.

You are right, but unfortunately Linux OS can do many things with the
software it has bundled, while Windows cannot, so such a comparison
couldn't be made.
I could ask to make a selection based on regular expressions from a text
file (using grep in Linux) and print only the latest 15 lines. This would
be very simple in Linux, but it might be harder to make under Windows.

Well the point is dueling operating systems right? That means that one
operating system has to win over all right? Or is it instead, how fast
a bunch of people on Macs can burn a CD, How fast a bunch of Windows
users can open a website? If that is so, I personally would rather know
how each of the operating systems stack up against each other from a
productivity stand point.

Wouldn't that only be effective if the system specs were similar?

Quickest boot times from first press of the on button to screen reader
start.

Subject: Seeking possible tasks for Dueling Operating Systems at CSUN
I am moderating an event called Dueling Operating Systems at the CSUN
conference next week. Three users of an operating system and screen
reader
combination will compete for a couple hours: Windows with JAWS, the
Mac with VoiceOver, and Gnome/Unix with Orca.
We agreed to develop a long list of possible tasks that would each
take
from about 3 to 5 minutes using software that comes with the operating
system, except for JAWS and Microsoft Office. Either I or others I
enlist
would pick a selection of tasks from the list at the actual event.
Each task should be described in a general enough way so that someone
can
choose the application and screen reader techniques that achieve the
same
result.
If anyone has suggestions about possible tasks to include on the list,
I
welcome such input.
Jamal
