RE: Oracle database facilities and screen readers

Hi -
I have successfully been doing Oracle DBA work now for about 8 years.
I found TOAD pretty inaccessible. And when I asked them about their
Section 508 compliance, I received copies of their VPATs which, I seem
to recall saying, that they recognize that TOAD is not compliant. But
there, they said it.

For myself, I use pretty exclusively SQLPLUS - both as a client from my
desktop which works OK as a text-based client, and also from unix
servers.
Of course, with it, you don't get all the bells&whistles that a nifty
tool like TOAD gives you.

As well, below is a posting that I copied from the JAWS List from back
in Sept 2008 and the writer, Harald, claims to be a DBA working for
Oracle. I haven't tried his suggestion yet though so cannot vouch for
it. But he's probably correct.

Oracle9i database administration is accessible from the command line but
the Oracle9i Enterprise Manager application is not.
However most customers today use the Oracle10g Enterprise Manager (named
GridControl) application to manage all their databases including
Oracle9i and even 8i.
GridControl is a HTML based tools that runs inside your browser.
GridControl can be placed in accessibility mode which makes it very
accessible.

The people from toad came to our work place and did a presentation and
that is one product that doesn't yet have its accessibility act
together. When I asked about that there were noises made about working
with me to get the product accessible but that's as far as that ever
went.

Hi,
I have recently tried both Toad and Enterprise Manager and could not get
around the gui. I have given up for now, but would be delighted to hear
from anyone who has had more success than I had.
SQLPlus is accessible, but the output from a Select wraps around if the
result is greater than the width of the screen. Even my sighted work
colleagues say it is virtually impossible to interpret the output when
this happens.
If you read the web sites of the makers of all of the above they will
say that their software is accessible. They even have documents
describing their VPATs, which are voluntary adherence to accessibility
standards. Where is the independent verification????
