yes, there is an entire system not only an editor.
It is called latex.
For windows for example you can use
miktec as compiler for latex,
texnick center as editor.

Is there an Open Source math editor like MathType around somewhere? Would anyone be interested in developing one? It should be cross-platform. Java, using SWT, seems to be the best bet. An interesting challenge!
