RE: Mono was: Shell Scripting Info

Except that Mono project practically came to a stop recently after a company
called Attachmate acquired Novell, the developers of openSUSE and the force
behind Mono.
The entire Mono team was laid off, which obviously includes the people working
on Mono's accessibility.
Anyway, its development has picked up again, but I can't say whether
accessibility of Mono applications is going to be a part of Mono development
any more or not.
You can read the latest on the topic here.

<sigh>
I sometimes think keeping accessibility features alive on various platforms is
like a video game- you have to battle evil monsters, give brownie points to the
helpers, and what not along the way.

If the code works in mono and fails in dot net, please inform the relevant mono
email list and provide relevant code so the bug or bugs you found can be
squashed.  Earlier programming for dot net 2.0 was a good way to ensure cross
platform compatibility since mono hadn't gone that far into the later dot net
standards yet.  That may or may not still be the case.  Mono probably will get
to work faster using nvda than jaws especially if other members of the windows
mono development list also do python since they might be able to help out
fixing the source code of nvda to work better with mono if they got interested
enough to help out.

Actually there is a good reason for using it if you can.  Especially if
you’re trying to create something you can use on the IPhone, Windows 7 and
Linux and have it work the same.  What I would do is create it under mono and
then when going to distribute for Windows I would test it with .net if it
didn’t work under .net then to keep only one source rrepo you would have to
use mono to keep it cross platform.  So what I am saying if I confused you with
that is code everything under mono.  Then if it works in .net great if not use
mono for cross platform reasons.

*nod*, indeed. But there’s sort of no point to using that on windows, I’d
wager?

I was absolutely referring to the Mono Dev environment with JAWS.  I installed
it, and I couldn’t even touch the menu bar, never mind actually being able to
create a project with it.  I’ll try it again and then give you more details.

As per http://www.mono-project.com/Supported_Platforms there is a Windows port
of Mono, that might be what she's referring to.On 5/16/2011 10:15 PM, Sina

You mean the .net development environment on windows? That actually works kind
of amazingly well with Jaws. What exactly are you referring to?

And with regards to how Orca will handle that. Hmm, that’s an interesting
one. I would have to do some research into that. I don’t think Mono is
expressed via ATK, so I’m not sure it will read with Orca.

Okay.  Thanks for the info.  I wasn’t sure about that.  But one thing I know
is that Open Suse has the Mono Framework in it by default, and accessibility
wise, on windows, it doesn’t really work too well in terms of the dev
environment, but how about accessibility with GTK# on linux?

Katherine,

KDE is making some strong steps towards accessibility, but is hardly there yet.
I wouldn’t bother at this time.

You could try it, gnome would be sluggish for you unless you have plenty of
memory to spare, but I'm not sure. My problems may just be a Vinux issue
though, because I ran a windows XP vm for testing for a while on the same
system with the same amount of memory. I have not had the time to sit down and
configure Linux+orca and gnome to see if it is in fact a Vinux issue though.

If you're using cli, these friends don't know what they're talking
about--virtual instances are just fine. Hell, there are enterprize level sites
ran out of the cloud, which is *gasp* virtual. My servers are virtual instances
on big boxes with tons and tons of ram, and they run perfectly. Now, if you
want a GUI... At least for Vinux, virtual does "blow," because it's slow, laggy
and painfully slow.

Speaking of virtual, and sorry to get off topic, but I’m curious.  I plan to
run a virtual instance of Open Suse from Novell on my laptop using VMware
player starting this summer.  I want to get acquainted with the Unix
environment just for the heck of it, but two of my friends say that virtual
instances of any Linux distro don’t work very well and that they “blowâ€.
What do you have to say about that?  Do you agree or disagree?  I ask because I
want this to be a cool experience rather than a waste of my time.  Thanks.

Hi Storm,

Very cool. What does someone need to take the class? I have Vinux Virtual on my
machine at home.

Hi,
It looks good. The only thing is, although you mension the Vinux Project you do
not make it a link. It should link to:
http://www.vinuxproject.org/

Also, if you would like another bash resource I have been teaching a class in a
new Vinux experiment called Vinux Classes. It's an irc chat room set up
specifically for teaching Vinux related classes. All the classes are logged and
are located at:
http://classroom.vinuxproject.org/

Thanks
Storm
