Re: Komodo Editor hot keys

Thank you for your help.

Jaws 7 and 8 doesn't read well the following chars:

a, s, t, A, S, T

It reads:
a instead of a (a tilda)
s instead of s (degrees)
t instead of t (thorn)
A instead of A (A tilda)
S instead of S (Superscript a)
T instead of T (Thorn)

I remember I've made some changes in the configuration files of Jaws in the past, and some of the letters were read correctly, but the words that contained those chars were not read correctly.

Which ones are you having trouble with and maybe I can try to help you out a bit with it. You can try typing them in an email response and I can see what exactly Jaws 8 is doing with them.

Oh yes I will try. I will try first to see if I will be able to configure Jaws 7 or 8 somehow to read those special chars.

Now in about a 30 second evaluation with NVDA and Komodo Edit. Even with an earlier experimental build of NVDA it does announce that menu items have a sub menu. I did not have the dialog come up again that did on the first run so could not test to see if it read that dialog with the progress bar ok. My conclusion is, it comes down to how well Jaws 6 implimented MSAA support and truth is, it has problems with MSAA. Sorry Octavian but yeah, I might suggest that you look around for an alternative screen reader for instances like that because Jaws 6 is just not programmed well enough to handle all of those kinds of situations. I just tried Komodo Edit with Jaws 6.2 and in fairness to Octavian it does have a few issues that at first glance could cause problems. Now keep in mind this is only with about a 2 minute glance at things and haven't looked to see how possible it would be to script it for Jaws 6. When you first start Komodo Edit there is a dialog box with a progress bar that comes up, and it was not reading the dialog box nor the progress bar associated with it, so for a person not able to watch the screen it could seem like it is taking forever for the program to start. It may be possible to script for this event if using BX or some other scripting tools other than home row. The menus themselves seem to all read fine but it does fail to give an indication of menu items with a sub menu. Not good, but I have seen applications that are worse. It is pretty easy with a bit of learning the app to figure out that if it doesnt have a hotkey after the menu item name that it could possibly have a sub menu, because if it is one that opens a dialog it does announce the 3 dots after it. That is the best evaluation I could give in two minutes but I hope it does clarify a few things. The Code menu includes a menu item called Marks. That word certainly
suggests bookmark features, which you said Komodo lacked. You could have tried right arrow to explore and then find a submenu with various bookmark commands and hot keys. Further down the Code menu are commands and hot
keys for navigating code, which you also said Komodo was lacking. You
made at least some of these criticisms after being told that JAWS 6 was substantially weaker than later versions regarding MSAA support. The list
of hot keys I posted was available to you in the documentation if you
had looked.

Persistent, unbalanced, and uninformed negativism can, indeed, become
irritating. It is not helpful to others to post wreckless and erroneous
or misleading conclusions about applications that have
incorporated substantial investments in accessibility. Such posts may
deter users from trying something that may be beneficial, and may
discourage developers who are trying to serve our needs as well as others.
These points are not profound insights but common sense, and repeated
disdain for them suggests ill will to our community.

You told me that the hotkeys for defining bookmarks can be found in the
source menu.
The single reason I wasn't able to find them there is because Commodo IDE is not accessible with Jaws 6 and Jaws 6 doesn't announce that a menu has
submenus, so I didn't know that I need to press right arrow.

(Those hotkeys are not in the code menu, but in the "Marks" submenu of the
code menu.)

Why are you so angry? Because I told that Commodo is not accessible with
jaws6? Or because I am using Jaws 6? Or something else?
