BRAILLE TRANSLATION TRAINEE

Participate in a training class that will result in NLS Literary Braille
certification.  Braille is a system of touch reading for the blind which
employs embossed dots evenly arranged in quadrangular letter spaces or
cells.  Learn to convert printed materials into Braille.  Learn to use
publisher files, Braille translation software and other Braille translation
skills.

EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

Associates degree or Bachelors degree in English, business, communications,
or related field required.  Certified transcript required.

Must have strong grammatical skills, as evidenced by attaining passing score
on test administered by Human Resources department.

Working knowledge of Microsoft Word as well as ability to keyboard (type) at
30 wpm required.  Qualified applicants must receive passing score on
computer proficiency test and have the ability to learn Braille Translation
rules and software.  

Strong organizational and analytical skills required, and the ability to
work independently and in small groups.

Must be able to read and follow detailed instructions, both oral and
written.

EQUIPMENT, MACHINES, TOOLS, AND WORK AIDS:

Personal computers, Microsoft Word.

PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONCERNS:

Job requires long hours of sitting, repetitive hand-wrist movement, and
constant viewing of computer screen.

COMPENSATION:

Starting Hourly Rate:   $11.50                

90-day Review and Continued Qualification Pay Rate:  $12.25            

180-day Review and Continued Qualification Pay Rate:  $13.00

NLS Literary Braille Certification Pay Rate:  $13.60 

Hours:    8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday
