It is, but program-l is advertised as the same thing on freelists. It makes a bit more sense, but I kind of see the gathering of that many people to be helpful. Lots of useful information can go back and forth. I am kind of curious though, why this hasn't been mentioned on program-l. I don't think we'd get nearly as much screaming and yelling from certain people, but I'd like to know what they think--shouldn't they have input into the matter?

ah, i don't have any idea about that other list, but i'm happy here! logically, "blind programming" is more descriptive name. isn't it? just my opinion. regards, prateek agarwal. This thread has been going on so long now I don't remember why the merge has been considered desirable but neither can I see any reason to be concerned about it. The traffic on this subject is one reason why Program-l might well not want this list as part of theirs. I believe the history was around a couple of people trying to make Microsoft Visual Basic more accessible given the programming environment of the time, an aging hippy type Canadian had developed some techniques to get around some of the problems of working the GUI and other issues in that programming environment, a few got together in England when they found each other and the Blind-l list remained their connection. It has evolved a little since but essentially that is why it is what it is. Merge the damn lists, the fluff will spin off and create it's own splinter list and there will be again two blind programming lists. It happens with Jaws with the various chat room communities and doubtless will happen with the blind programming community. It doesn't seem to matter what the subject, short canes, long canes, canes or dog guides, woodworking or handyman, ForThePeople or VIP Conduit and isn't there another one? Braille users and non-braille users. Seems to me the list of proprietary anxieties among the blind is endless. Personally I would be glad for this to end and get back to the point of one or other, actually both lists. They're a bit more formal, windows tech support questions will probably be squashed, but then those are off-topic anyway. They do joke, so they're not off-topic nazi's. As far as I can tell, and I've been on both lists for a number of years the guys on that list are very much like the guys on this list. As has been said the tone is a little different, seems more focused on programming, less general enquiries but jokes have been posted before and weren't squashed, web development questions and the like have been asked and answered and there are some very knowledgeable and experienced people on that list. What does worry me a little is that no information has been posted on program-l about this merge. As said in a previous post, I don't really mind either way, but I don't see it as losing a community. The community will still be there, just in a different place and with some more members. Just my thoughts. Nick.
