Hi again -- I can top that horror story -- you can't always trust what your instructor gives you -- in a graduate class, the professor teaching it wrote the central part of a large virtual machine and our assignment was to write a mini compiler for it. Problem was, he gave the assignment out, then said he would be gone for 2 weeks, but told us where everything was. There was a serious bug in his part of the code. What was more, I was the first to discover it, and so it fell to me to fix his code so the class could do their assignments. I never could figure out if this prof really did this on purpose. When he came back and we told him what happened, he blew it off by saying "oh, sorry...next we'll be talking about ..." It was kind of fun to be a class hero for a while. I don't think I'm quite as curious of a hacker now. --le ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jay Macarty" <jay.macarty2009@xxxxxxxxx> To: <programmingblind@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Wednesday, June 30, 2010 2:30 PM Subject: Re: I feel like giving up on programming altogether! Jes, I know it seems like fighting an uphill battle sometimes but don't give up on it. In my first COBOL class, we copied a program from the teacher and all we had to do was compile it. But I got a bunch of errors and started thinking maybe I wasn't cut out for this. As it turned out, the teacher made a mistake in writing the program out on the board; so, we all got errors trying to compile. Bottom line is to to not give up. Post your code here on the list and I am sure we can help you get on a successful path to writing code. As someone else stated, don't be discouraged by a bunch of error messages because a simple thing can cause an error that then has the effect of generating a bunch of other errors. So, sometimes its just a simple fix that corrects a bunch of errors at once. Hang in there and know that you have people on this list who want to help you be successful. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jes" <theeternalkid@xxxxxxxxx> To: <programmingblind@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Wednesday, June 30, 2010 12:59 PM Subject: I feel like giving up on programming altogether! Hi all, All I get when using visual studio are nothing but errors! I just want to be able to write a program and have it work! Just once! But no. All I get are errors! So what's the use in even trying? Encouragement needed badly! Thanks.
