What makes sense. -----Original Message----- From: programmingblind-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:programmingblind-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Mike Sent: Tuesday, September 13, 2011 2:36 PM To: programmingblind@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: Re: Compiling Python Programs for Windows Use I think the Redist-MSI module you are referring to is for distributing modules in the form of libraries for others to use in developing their software, as opposed to distributing built applications. Someone on the list please correct me if I am wrong, but it seems that is what I read from Python's documentation somewhere. -----Original Message----- From: Katherine Moss Sent: Tuesday, September 13, 2011 1:31 PM To: programmingblind@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: RE: Compiling Python Programs for Windows Use Though on Windows, you really don't need py2exe, do you? Because of the Redist-MSI module. Or am I not understanding what that does? -----Original Message----- From: programmingblind-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:programmingblind-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Mike Sent: Tuesday, September 13, 2011 2:27 PM To: programmingblind@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: Re: Compiling Python Programs for Windows Use Tyler, yes I tried importing py2exe and got the error that you receive when a module is not available. For those inquiring about Py2exe in the first place, honestly I would not worry about it unless you build an app that you are serious about distributing. On the other hand, if the app only uses modules from Python's standard library, it is easy enough to ask your users to just install the Python interpreter and run the source. It makes the app more open source, easier to port to other platforms without having to rebuild another binary, and easy enough to modify the source. Asking my friend to install Python was the approach I took when I wrote her a temperature conversion app that she requested. I just told her to double click the .py file to run it. Of course, yes this approach depends on the number of dependencies that your app uses. In some cases, I would agree with using Py2Exe if the app is huge or if it uses a lot of nonstandard libraries. -----Original Message----- From: Littlefield, Tyler Sent: Tuesday, September 13, 2011 9:04 AM To: programmingblind@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: Re: Compiling Python Programs for Windows Use Seems I was wrong about py2exe coming with Python, sorry about that. But yeah, I'm pretty sure you can download the redistributables.
