Books on introduction to programming?

Hi all,
I'm interested in learning how to program. I was thinking of taking a computer
programming course in college to fulfill a math requirement, but the professor
said they use Alice to learn programming. Is Alice accessible on the Mac or on
Windows?
Any books you can recommend to a newbie? From where can I get these?
