Yes, subroutines in Java are the same as functions in other programming languages, and they have the same behavior pretty much. The author of the textbook I recommended uses the phrase "subroutine" early on to keep confusing object-oriented concepts out of the way. Early on, the emphasis is on using objects and later on he will start calling them methods when he talks about the ins and outs of object-oriented programming.
