Hmm. I'm not sure mixing boats and the term vertical is a good idea. At
best it could induce sea-sickness, and at worst, it might imply sinking.
<grin>
All the best,
David

So in this case the vertical market would be boats that serve food?

Hi David,
I wonder if it is more of an American term! From dictionary.com, I found
the following.
[begin quote]
vertical market
Part of Speech:
noun
Definition:
in business, all of the potential purchasers within a business sector; a
market which meets the needs of a particular industry by producing similar
goods or services, e.g. banking, insurance, transportation
Source:
Webster's New Millennium(tm) Dictionary of English, Preview Edition (v
0.9.5)
Copyright (c) 2003, 2004 Lexico Publishing Group, LLC
[end quote]
In this case, I was referring to software applications especially designed
for the boating industry. My understanding of the term "vertical market
application" is as a set of software modules that support the database
fields and business procedures typically needed by an industry, which is
then customized--often with involvement of the developer--to the
requirements of a particular corporate customer.
Cheers,
Jamal

Hi Jamal,
Just an aside query here. We had an entire team of local government
analysts bemused by this term "vertical market" in the context in which you
used it. They also found a reference to "verticalised help". Could you
shed any light on what on earth it means? I looked for a glossary on the
web, but came up blank. <smile>
All the best,
David

In addition to the other, excellent advice you have received, I suggest
doing some web searches to become familiar with vertical market applications
in this area (if you have not done so already). You can get a sense of
commonly desired features and pricing models for software in this industry.
You might learn of 3rd party add-ins or data sets that would be advantageous
to incorporate, thus affecting your choice of development tools and overall
design.

Hi All.
I'd like to consult the group experience which is vastly bigger than my own.
I've been approached by the company which my brother works for. There a trip
boat company who have 4 boats which people can charter or book on for trips
or a meal. Currently there using a paper based booking system which is
creating a lot of confusion and the owner would like a computer system to
simplify the whole process. There going to pay me but have asked for a rough
quote.
A customer phones up and talks to a member of staff who selects the date and
trip that they want to book or a boat if it's a charter, if food is required
then a menu is selected. for each day print outs of the schedule for the
boat staff and kitchen staff are distributed so every one knows what is
needed for that day.
Obviously a database with a front end is needed. What's the going rate for
this sort of thing? considering that I'm one developer working at this in my
spare time.
I'm going to need to analyse the current system, document the analysis in
use cases, write the code, install the system, create user documentation and
support the system.
Any ideas?
Cheers.
Nick.
