U.S. university joins 15 Asian colleges in new global education program 



ST. LOUIS (AP): Washington University said Wednesday it is joining with 15 
Asian universities on a new global education and research program, the 
McDonnell International Scholars Academy. 

The academy will enroll exceptional graduate and professional students from the 
partner schools across all graduate disciplines. About 20 scholars will begin 
work at the academy next fall. While the first students are from Asia, the 
school envisions others will come from throughout much of the world. 

The Asian universities participating are: Peking University in Beijing, 
University of Tokyo, Fudan University in Shanghai, Tsinghua University in 
Beijing, Yonsei University in Seoul, Indian Institute of Technology in Bombay, 
Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, China Agricultural University in 
Beijing,National University of Singapore, University of Indonesia, Seoul 
National University, University of Hong Kong, Korea University in Seoul, 
Chinese University of Hong Kong, and National TaiwanUniversity in Taipei. 

The U.S. school has received a $10 million endowmentcommitment from John F. 
McDonnell, retired chairman of McDonnell Douglas Corp., and the JSM Charitable 
Trust founded byMcDonnell's father, the late aerospace pioneer James S. 
McDonnell. 

The program has received support from nine multinational corporations, other 
foundations and individuals for the St. Louis-based program, school officials 
said. 

They will have all expenses paid, including tuition, room, board and travel. 

The academy will teach them in their degree areas but also work to prepare them 
as future leaders with knowledge about the United States, other nations and 
international issues. 

The program includes participation in leadership training, cultural events and 
sessions in Washington, D.C., with government policy-makers and grant 
administrators. 

Each scholar will be paired with a faculty member, serving as a mentor. The 
faculty member will also travel with the scholar to the scholar's school, 
building relationships between Washington University and the partner 
university. 

"Research universities outside the United States are improving at a rapid pace, 
especially those in Asia," said the university's chancellor Mark Wrighton in a 
statement. 

He said to make more progress on world problems related to the environment, 
energy, disease, conflicts and poverty, the school is expanding its 
partnerships with international universities and corporations. (**)
