US commander raises possibility of another troop increase in Iraq

WASHINGTON (AFP) - The top United States commander in the Middle East 
suggested he was likely to ask for another extension in the current 
troop levels in Iraq (news - web sites), now at 135,000, and might 
even ask for more troops beyond that. 

The New York Times said Saturday Central Command head General John 
Abizaid had made clear in an interview that the security situation 
was liable to worsen as the June 30 deadline for handing over 
sovereignty to Iraq approached. 

The general cited the likelihood of new insurgent attacks against 
American troops and expressed doubt about the current reliability of 
Iraqi security forces, the report said. 

The Pentagon (news - web sites) has already extended by 90 days the 
tours of 20,000 soldiers in Iraq and offered to find new troops to 
keep the deployment at 135,000, if the military deems it necessary. 

The Times said General Abizaid gave the clearest indication yet that 
he would ask for those troops. 

"If the situation stays about like it is, I will certainly ask that 
those forces be replaced," the paper quotes him as saying. "We're 
going to make sure we have the right forces in place to do the job 
that needs to be done." 

The general also said it was possible that he would request an 
increase beyond the 135,000 troops, if other nations withdrew their 
troops, as Spain, Honduras and the Dominican Republic said they 
would, and if the training of most Iraqi security forces was not 
completed in time. 

"If the security situation worsens and we think it's appropriate to 
bring in more troops, or if countries decide to withdraw their 
troops, we'll see this thing through," The Times quotes Abizaid as 
saying. "We'll adjust to a combination of US force levels, Iraqi 
readiness and steadiness, and coalition forces."
