[ppi] [ppiindia] Tindakan US belum menyelesaikan masalah di Irak<-- bukan cita cita Nabi Isa

** Mailing List|Milis Nasional Indonesia PPI-India **

Bagaimana perlu mengadakan gencatan senjata untuk menahan diri di=20
Irak? jangan bila ada ledakan pemboman hanya segelintir orang pejuang=20
iseng/oknum. Bahkan Penyerangan oleh US jangan hanya memikirkan perlu=20
mengabiskan lawan lawannya.=20

A Series of Explosions Rocks Fallujah=20

FALLUJAH, Iraq - A series of explosions and gunfire rocked Fallujah=20
on Wednesday in new fighting the day after a heavy battle in which=20
U.S. warplanes and artillery pounded the city in a show of force=20
against Sunni insurgents holed up in a slum.=20

Gunfire and mortar blasts could be heard for more than an hour from=20
southwestern Fallujah in the afternoon, then three thunderous=20
explosions shook the area as warplanes circled overhead. Two black=20
plumes of smoke rose over the area, as heavy machine-gun fire=20
continued.=20

Despite three straight days of battles, U.S. officials say they are=20
pushing ahead with negotiations to resolve the Fallujah standoff=20
rather than launch an all-out offensive. Iraqi police took up posts=20
in parts of the city, laying the groundwork for Marine patrols to=20
begin circulating to establish control.=20

"We're going to continue to push the political track as far as it's=20
going to take us. And if it doesn't take us far enough, we're=20
prepared to use military means," Brig. Gen. Mark Kimmitt told=20
ABC's "Good Morning America."=20

In southern Iraq (news - web sites), meanwhile, gunmen ambushed a=20
Ukrainian convoy outside the city of Kut, barraging it with rocket-
propelled grenades and machine guns. One Ukrainian was killed and two=20
wounded, the Ukrainian Defense Ministry said.=20

Shiite militiamen loyal to radical cleric Muqtada al-Sadr succeeded=20
in driving Ukrainian peacekeepers out of Kut earlier this month, but=20
U.S. troops later swept into the city, pushing out most of the=20
militiamen.=20

U.S. troops aiming to capture al-Sadr and suppress his militia began=20
Wednesday to gradually expand their operations out of their base in=20
the holy city of Najaf. Soldiers set up checkpoints on the road=20
outside the base =97 the main route between the center of Najaf and the=20
center of neighboring Kufa.=20

The military is seeking to increase pressure on al-Sadr but is=20
treading carefully, promising to stay away from sacred Shiite sites=20
at the heart of the city. The base, where U.S. troops moved in=20
earlier this week, is about three miles from the shrines.=20

A U.S. soldier died Tuesday in Baghdad, raising the U.S. death toll=20
for April to 115 =97 the same number killed during the invasion of Iraq=20
that toppled Saddam Hussein (news - web sites) last year. Up to 1,200=20
Iraqis also have been killed this month.=20

Saddam's 67th birthday was Wednesday, his first in U.S. detention at=20
an undisclosed location since being captured by American troops in=20
December. In his hometown of Tikrit, there were no apparent signs of=20
celebration, and schools and universities were closed.=20

Outside Baghdad, gunmen opened fire on a military convoy headed in=20
the direction of Fallujah, killing or wounding at least two people.=20

After the attack, a cargo truck was left with its tires shot out and=20
windshield pockmarked with bullets. Pools of blood were on either=20
side of the truck's cab, and U.S. soldiers at the scene said two=20
casualties were taken away. Their nationalities were unknown.=20

Wednesday's fighting in Fallujah came after a heavy battle on Tuesday=20
night against insurgents holed up in the northern neighborhood of=20
Jolan, a slum area of tight alleyways. AC-130 gunships and artillery=20
pounded insurgent targets in Jolan for more than an hour, sending=20
smoke and orange flames into the sky.=20

After sunrise, at least eight destroyed houses could be seen in the=20
Jolan neighborhood. Hospitals reported Wednesday that two people were=20
wounded in the fighting. Militants, however, often do not evacuate=20
their casualties to hospitals fearing that the injured could be=20
arrested by American forces.=20

Kimmitt said the battle was sparked when troops saw two trucks moving=20
through the city with their lights off in an area where insurgents=20
had been active earlier in the day.=20

The AC-130s destroyed the trucks, and ammunition in the trucks=20
exploded, Kimmitt told NBC's "Today" show.=20

The length of the barrage Tuesday night suggested U.S. forces are=20
seeking to wear down the insurgents in Jolan. Elsewhere in the city,=20
the military is preparing to send in patrols Thursday to establish=20
control. Those will avoid the Jolan area, commanders say.=20

On Monday, insurgents attacked Marines in the neighborhood, killing=20
one American in a battle that ended when a tank destroyed a mosque's=20
minaret from which U.S. commanders said insurgents were firing. Eight=20
Iraqis were killed.=20

Several families were seen fleeing the city Wednesday. The fighting=20
came at the end of a truce in which Marines outside of the city=20
promised not to assault Fallujah if gunmen gave up their arms. U.S.=20
commanders have said that insurgents have only given up unusable=20
weapons.=20

"I was pinning some hope on the truce. The American air bombing=20
dashed my hopes," Ali Muzel said as he escorted his wife and five=20
children to Baghdad.=20

Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld said Tuesday that continuing=20
negotiations in Fallujah was "worth the try."=20

Gen. Richard Myers, chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, also=20
said the coalition has not given up on a cease-fire. But, he said in=20
a speech in New York, "we don't have unlimited patience."=20

British Prime Minister Tony Blair (news - web sites) defended U.S.=20
tactics in Fallujah, rejecting an opposition legislator's assertion=20
that the attack amounted to the "murder or mutilation of hundreds of=20
women had children."=20

Disagreeing with that description by Sir Peter Tapsell, Blair said=20
there were large numbers of well-armed insurgents in Fallujah and "it=20
is right that the American forces try to make sure that order is=20
restored to that city."=20

South of Baghdad, U.S. forces set up checkpoints in Najaf, just=20
outside their base. Another checkpoint was established on a bridge=20
outside Kufa =97 scene of a heavy battle Monday in which 64 Iraqis were=20
killed.=20

"They took a heavy beating," said Col. Brad May, commander of the 2nd=20
Cavalry Regiment. "Our goal ... is to continue to pressure al-Sadr=20
and his militia. We are not going away."=20

But he emphasized that troops have "been very careful to respect"=20
shrines in Kufa and Najaf.=20
