      Syria will talk peace 'when Israel is ready' 
     



      DAMASCUS -- Syria is ready to resume the peace process with Israel 
whenever the Jewish state is ready, Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal Meqdad said 
on Sunday. 

      "When Israel, supported by the US, is ready to resume the peace process 
on the basis (of international resolutions), Syria will be constantly ready to 
achieve results that restore the Arabs' legitimate rights, notably a just 
peace" in the region, Meqdad said. 

      He was speaking during a joint news conference with visiting American 
pastor Jesse Jackson. 

      "We will continue our efforts to bring about a just peace," Meqdad added. 

      Peace talks with Syria have been frozen since January 2000 over the 
thorny issue of the Golan Heights, occupied by Israel in 1981. On August 15, 
the day after the United Nations Security Council passed Resolution 1701 on a 
cessation of hostilities in Lebanon, President Bashar al-Assad said he did "not 
expect peace in the near future" with Israel. 

      "Peace would involve Israel returning occupied lands to their owners and 
restoring their rights," Assad said. "Israel is an enemy founded on the basis 
of aggression and hegemony. 

      "The peace process has failed. It has failed since its inception." 

      On Monday Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert ruled out a resumption of 
peace talks with Syria while Damascus "continues to support terrorism". 

      Meqdad on Sunday stressed Syria's "permanent support" for the United 
Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), saying: "We look positively on the 
important role played by the United Nations in this regard." 

      At a foreign ministers' meeting of the 25-nation bloc on Friday, European 
Union states pledged up to 7,000 troops towards an expanded UNIFIL which is due 
to total up to 15,000 peacekeepers. The beefed-up force of "blue helmets" was 
outlined in the Security Council Resolution, which brought about a cessation of 
hostilities to the 34-day Israeli offensive on Lebanon launched after Shiite 
Hezbollah fighters seized two of the Jewish state's soldiers in a deadly 
cross-border raid on July 12. 

      "We are happy that UNIFIL will not be implicated in tasks which will 
create problems for it," Meqdad said, referring obliquely to the disarmament of 
Hezbollah -- also called for in the UN resolution.
