Italian detained by Acehnese syariah police



Banda Aceh (ANTARA News) - An Italian identified as Giuseppe, is still being 
detained by Acehnese Police in Banda Aceh, Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam (NAD), for 
an alleged narcotic drug and elicit sexual offence.

"The Italian employed by a non-governmental organisation (NGO) is still in 
police custody," spokesman for NAD police Senior Commisioner Jodi Heriyadi said 
here on Monday.

Apart from using narcotinc drugs, Giuseppe also had sex with an Acehnese woman, 
identified as Wardiana, which was strictly forbidden under local Aceh syariah 
(Islamic) law.

The Italian was arrested by Acehnese Syariah Police at a house in Pulo Kiton, 
Bireuen village, when he was having sex with his Acehnese girl friend several 
days ago, said Jodi.

Moreover, he was also suspected of using narcotic drugs at that the time of his 
arrest, and the case was still under police investigation.

According to him, the police had contacted the Italian Embassy in Jakarta, but 
up to now no representative of the embassy had come to Banda Aceh.

In the meantime, an Acehnese prominent figure, Teungku Iskandar asked the Aceh 
Provincial Administration to impose the syariah law on whoever had breached the 
Islamic law by lashes with a cane.

"I hope whoever, including foreigners, who have breached the syariah law must 
be punished without exception," he said.

Under the Syariah Law which is in force in Aceh, it is forbidden for unmarried 
couples to have sex, also to gamble, drink alcoholic beverages, as well as 
using narcotic drugs. Those proven guilty must be punished by lashes with the 
cane, he said. (*)
