Young Techies
Friends, we should note that human mind is a unique
gift. You can try to fathom the marvels of universe.
You can enter into it only if you have curiosity and
thinking. I suggest to all the youngsters, thinking
should become your capital asset, no matter whatever
ups and downs you come across in your life. Thinking
is progress. Non-thinking is destruction to the
individual, organisation and the country. Thinking
leads to action. Knowledge without action is useless
and irrelevant. Knowledge with action brings
prosperity. I would like you, dear youngsters, to have
a mind to explore every aspect of human life.
This is what President, Dr A P J Abdul Kalam,
reiterates to young people. Two students, V K
Lakshmanan and S. Gayatri of the Velammal Engineering
College, Chennai, have acted as per Kalam's words.
They were the only young people among the 300
participants from all over the world to attend the
Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers
(IEEE) Nano 2004 international conference held from
August 6-19 at the Technical University of Munich,
Germany. These students presented a paper on 'A basic
architecture for a multistate memory system using
nano-antennas'.
The two young scientists are in their final year (they
were studying third-year when their paper was selected
for the conference) Electronics and Communication
Engineering. The contemporary CD technology uses Laser
light, but Lakshmanan and Gayatri's technology uses
white light. Their innovative technology for compact
disc (CD) is an excellent technology, by which one can
increase the memory storage capacity.
When they explained this is at the international
conference, there was appreciation for them from all
quarters.
In an interview to Chennaionline, Lakshmanan and
Gayatri shared their experiences, Lakshmanan said, "We
are the members of IEEE in our college and so we saw
the intimation about the conference in its website and
as both of us were interested in this field, we
applied for this conference. As we were under-graduate
students, the registration fee of 150 euros (Rs.
8,400) was waived." IEEE awarded Rs 23,000 to both the
students for the research paper.
Gayatri said they already had e-mail contact with the
IEEE consortium and it was not new for them to meet
the IEEE members in Germany.
Speaking about the expenses, the students said college
chairman M V Muthuramalingam provided Rs 25,000 each
for the students and Swaminathan from ELMAC Industries
presented Rs. 22,000.
Asked about the response from the students, Gayatri
stated that their juniors have started asking how to
apply for such conferences and how to write such
technical papers.
The duo's ambition is to become scientists in this
field, for achieving their vision, they have embarked
on a mission to continue their higher studies in this
field and do Ph.D.
Gayatri pointed out that they have been sharing the
details about the paper and they are also ready to
teach anybody who wants to know more about nano
technology and their paper.
Another important news is that the updated version of
their paper 'A basic architecture for a multi-state
memory system using nano-antennas' by these two young
scientists have been selected for another
international conference in California, USA, for which
they are in need of funds.
According to them, "if anybody helps us, as our
college chairman and Swaminathan did for our earlier
trip to Munich, we will be able to win more laurels
from the international conference in California."
Lakshmanan further said, "If we had done the project
in Very Large-Scale Integration (VLSI) technology,
that industry would have supported us, but in India
nano technology industry has not improved like VLSI,
so nobody is there to help us."
Dr C Rathnasabapathy, principal, Velammal Engineering
College, urged corporates, industries and other
philanthropists to help the students attend the
conference in California.
The principal said even though there are many big
companies in India producing various computer-related
components, the industry is dependent on countries
like Taiwan and Thailand for computer components.
He further stated that India has improved a lot in the
software field but not in the hardware field, and
there was a lot of work to be done in hardware.
Asked about the support given by their family for
their trip to Munich, Gayatri stated, "My family was
very much cooperative to allow me to travel to Munich,
even though I was a girl."
Both the students want to continue their higher
studies in nano technology in India, but there are not
enough institutes to teach it. So, they stated they
would continue their higher studies in USA and come
back and serve India.
Lakshmanan was confident that nano technology can
create a revolution in the world as computers did.
Gayatri stated that many Indians attended the
conference representing various countries from the
world - a south Indian represented NASA.
"Many delegates were interested in our paper and they
asked many things about the technology and about our
paper," Gayatri adds.
Lakshmanan pointed out that in India there is less
development for nano technology than USA. For example,
we were not able to locate a hi-tech telescope for
nano technology, whereas such a telescope is available
in all universities in USA.
Rathnasabapathy stated that it was happy news for the
college. "Being young students, they had the
opportunity to present a difficult technical paper at
an international conference representing India."
Asked if the college would support projects done by
other students, as the duo did, the principal was
optimistic that the college chairman would provide
funds for them also.
