Pemerintah US meminta pasukan US memasuki ke Najaf, salah satu=20
pasukan Us.=20
Silakan membaca berita secara teliti di bawah ini,
wassalam

General: U.S. Troops Ready to Enter Najaf=20
NAJAF, Iraq - U.S. troops will likely enter parts of Najaf soon to=20
clamp down on a radical Shiite cleric's rebel militia, but they will=20
stay away from sensitive holy sites in the center of the city to=20
avoid rousing religious outrage, a U.S. general said Sunday.=20
Shiite leaders have warned of a possible explosion of anger among the=20
country's Shiite majority if U.S. troops enter Najaf. Until now, U.S.=20
commanders have been saying troops would not go in.=20
With the new move, the military seeks to impose a degree of control=20
in Najaf, while hoping a foray limited to the modern parts of the=20
ancient city would not inflame Shiites. Brig. Gen. Mark Hertling did=20
not say when troops would move in, or how many.=20
American officials were attempting a similar, limited step in the war-
torn city of Fallujah, the other main front of fighting.=20
United Nations (news - web sites) envoy Lakhdar Brahimi urged the=20
Bush administration Sunday to "tread carefully" in besieged Fallujah=20
and avoid alienating an already angry populace.=20
As for Najaf, one of the holiest cities of Islam's Shiite sect that=20
also is under near siege by U.S. forces, Brahimi warned of a disaster=20
if American soldiers enter the city to hunt down a radical cleric.=20
"This is a city with a lot of history. It is charged with a huge,=20
huge quantity, if I might, if that's the word for it, of history,"=20
Brahimi said on ABC's "This Week."=20
U.S. troops will begin patrols alongside Iraqi security forces in=20
Fallujah, said Hachim al-Hassani, a top Iraqi negotiator. The move is=20
an apparent attempt to restore control over the insurgent stronghold=20
without a full-scale Marine assault.=20
But like a previous agreement aimed at reducing the violence in the=20
city, the new step hinged greatly on the response of Sunni=20
guerrillas, who were asked to turn in their heavy weapons.=20
"We hope the U.S. soldiers will not be attacked when they enter the=20
city. If they are attacked, they will respond and this will lead to=20
problems," al-Hassani told The Associated Press.=20
He said Fallujah residents have promised not to attack. But U.S.=20
officials have questioned whether Fallujah civic leaders who have=20
been negotiating with the Americans have enough influence with=20
insurgents. Guerrillas have not abided by a previous call from the=20
civil leaders to surrender their heavy weapons, U.S. commanders say.=20
In Baghdad on Sunday, a roadside bomb exploded by a U.S. patrol,=20
killing a U.S. soldier.=20
When the troops returned to retrieve the stricken vehicle, they found=20
several children on it, taking material, Brig. Gen. Mark Kimmitt told=20
reporters.=20
As the troops approached the vehicle, gunmen on neighboring rooftops=20
opened fire, sparking a battle with the soldiers, he said.=20
Witnesses reported Iraqi casualties in the fight, but it was not=20
immediately known if any of the children were among them.=20
Also Sunday, a rocket hit near a hospital in the northern city of=20
Mosul, killing three people, doctors said. Elsewhere in the city, a=20
mortar hit a residential area, killing one Iraqi.=20
In southern Iraq (news - web sites), U.S. military officials were=20
trying to determine the launching point of an unprecedented suicide=20
boat attack on two offshore oil terminals. The attackers, using=20
explosive-packed boats, killed three U.S. service members and forced=20
the shutdown of the two terminals.=20
The third victim of the attack, a U.S. Coast Guardsman, died of his=20
injuries on Sunday.=20
Asked if the attackers came from inside Iraq or neighboring Iran or=20
Kuwait, Navy Cmdr. James Graybeal, of the U.S. Navy (news - web=20
sites)'s Bahrain-based 5th Fleet, said, "That's what were trying to=20
determine."=20
Insurgents often attack oil pipelines in Iraq and have repeatedly=20
shut down exports from northern oil fields to Turkey.=20
Saturday's bombings were the first such maritime attack on the=20
industry and resembled al-Qaida-linked strikes off the coast of Yemen=20
against the USS Cole (news - web sites) in 2000 and a French oil=20
tanker in 2002 that killed 17 American sailors and a tanker crewman.=20
President Bush (news - web sites) held a conference call Saturday=20
with his top commander in the Middle East, Gen. John Abizaid. U.S.=20
commanders have been threatening a full-scale offensive to take=20
Fallujah and uproot insurgents unless guerrillas hand over their=20
heavy weapons.=20
But an assault would revive fighting that killed hundreds of Iraqis=20
and at least 109 U.S. troops in April =97 the deadliest month in Iraq=20
for the Americans.=20
Al-Hassani told the AP that joint U.S.-Iraqi patrols would begin=20
Tuesday in Fallujah, when orders will be issued forbidding residents=20
from carrying weapons in the streets.=20
He said 75 families who fled Fallujah during the fighting will be=20
allowed to return. Nearly a third of the city's 200,000 residents=20
have fled since the siege began April 5.=20
A new move into parts of Najaf would also carry heavy risks.=20
"We probably will go into the central part of the city. Will we=20
interfere in the religious institutions? Absolutely not," said=20
Hertling, a deputy commander of the 1st Armored Division.=20
He did not say when the move would occur, but it appeared unlikely=20
for several days and was aimed at tightening the clampdown on radical=20
cleric Muqtada al-Sadr and his militia.=20
"It's not going to be large-scale fighting, the likes of other=20
places, but it's going to be critical," he said. "We're going to=20
drive this guy into the dirt."=20
"Either he tells his militia to put down their arms, form a political=20
party and fight with ideas not guns =97 or he's going to find a lot of=20
them killed," he said.=20
Meanwhile, an Army reservist missing since a convoy attack April 9=20
was confirmed dead. The remains of Sgt. Elmer Krause, 40, were found=20
Friday, according to the Pentagon (news - web sites). Another soldier=20
and a U.S. contract worker abducted in the same attack remain=20
unaccounted for.=20
The latest deaths brought to 111 the number of U.S. troops killed in=20
Iraq since the beginning of April. At least 720 have died since the=20
March 2003 invasion.=20
