What makes me use powerdot instead of beamer is that I am really fed up to
see presentations made with the latter. You can tell from miles away when a
presentation is done with beamer: it is really recognisable, a massive
amount of people use it. Sometimes, in conferences, you can see up to three
presentations in a row made with the blue/black beamer's style. I prefer the
powerdot's styles.
On the other hand the 400 pages of the beamer's manual are absolutely
necessary. That it is not only a manual for beamer. It is a very good manual
about preparing presentations. It is worth browsing and reading.

On the other hand, if you want to take advantage of the power of
pstricks, you need to use option 1, with either of powerdot or beamer.
I, like probably most people on this list, am partial to powerdot :-)
My personal take is that powerdot gets things done in a clear way.
Beamer seems to allow for a thousand different ways to do things (and
its manual is a big put-off, at over 400 pages).
But in the end I think you already know the right thing to do: try
them both and see what is best for you.
