Hi Julian,
IMHO the more essential difference between the classes is as follows:
Beamer accepts two ways of compiling source files:
1. LATEX => DVI => PS => PDF (using LaTeX, Ghostscript and Ps2Pdf),
2. LATEX => PDF (using PDFLaTeX),
whereas Powerdot accepts only first way. So, if you want directly
include, e.g., *.jpeg pictures into presentation, you should use
Beamer.
On the other hand, if you want to take advantage of the power of
pstricks, you need to use option 1, with either of powerdot or beamer.
I, like probably most people on this list, am partial to powerdot :-)
My personal take is that powerdot gets things done in a clear way.
Beamer seems to allow for a thousand different ways to do things (and
its manual is a big put-off, at over 400 pages).
But in the end I think you already know the right thing to do: try
them both and see what is best for you.
