Recently I ran a MiKTeX update and I have been having a very similar problem
where the clock option does not work.

Subject: [powerdot] 'clock' isn't working anymore
The clock option doesn't work any longer with my files nor with the example 3
file of the ctan distribution of powerdot. The problem arose after an MiKTeX
update. Formally the files compiled with the clock option, now the file
compiles only if the clock option is omitted. Does anybody know about this
problem? Is it a powerdot problem or an xcolor problem? The error message reads:
! Extra \else.
<argument> ...\bgroup \@EA \dosetunexpanded \else
\@EA \docomunexpanded \fi
...
l.1 \pdbookmark{sec.0.slide}{sec.0}{2}{Overview}
! Argument of \docomunexpanded has an extra }.

l.1 \pdbookmark{sec.0.slide}{sec.0}{2}{Overview}
Runaway argument?
! Paragraph ended before \docomunexpanded was complete.
Manfred.
