Jan,
How old is the computer? Have you tried physically cleaning it? Open the
case and blow out the dust bunnies with a can of air? Is the fan running
when it should?
Since it worked again after a reformat, I would suspect something that is
running. How about cleaning out temp files, cache, history, cookies, etc.? I
don't use Norton's, and I know that it is highly recommended, but I also
know that many people have problems with it.
How often do they clean temp files, regclean, scandisk, defrag?
Grasping at straws myself, but I really don't think that the closeness to
the refrigerator should have any effect on it.
You might try going to start>run> type "msconfig" without the
quotes>startup, and unchecking each thing one by one. You will have to
reboot after each thing and see if anything changes. Or you can do the
reverse, uncheck everything not needed (see sites below for stuff that
should NOT be unchecked) and add back one-by-one.

| A friend of mine, their computer has had episodes of locking up, crashing,
| freezing, etc. It will go for a while just fine & then it will start up.
| It's random when it does it, they are not doing anything in particular
when
| it happens, could be when they start the computer up, or getting email or
| whatever. They are not doing the same thing every time it happens. It's a
| Celeron 533 mhz, 128mb mem. They have win 98 2nd ed in the computer. They
| have an antivirus program, which they keep updated, we've gone through the
| file checker feature, disk cleanup, defrag, win doctor, etc. Basically,
the
| only thing they use the computer for is the internet. The only programs
| they have in the computer besides windows is printshop, which they don't
use
| too often & Norton systemworks 2000. We even formatted the harddrive &
| started fresh & it was OK for a while, then it starts crashing again. I
| tried a different video card & change memory modules. I finally disabled
| Norton's crashguard but I haven't heard back from them if that helped or
| not. Their computer tower is right next to the frig & I was wondering if
| there could be some sort of "interference" that could be the problem.
| Grasping at straws on that one.
