-=PCTechTalk=- capturing devices & dig camcorders

Hi, I am hoping there are some movie/camcorder buffs out there that can give
me some clues. I am taking a beginning dig camcorder course. I bought a
camcorder (dig), an HD one, sony DCR-SR-80. my first camcorder.

I bought and installed Pinacle editing software, I had a firewire card
installed but am told that this camcorder does not use it. I was able to
transfer some footage to my hard drive only after installing software that
came with the camcorder using USB port and cable from the camcorder to hard
drive. I could not transfer the footage before installing the CD that came
with the camcorder. Was that the capturing device? I thought the CD just
had editing software on it as well as a users guide. I was confused and had
tried to capture it using my Pinacle software that was previously installed.
That did not work.

I did google some but am confused about exactly what a capture device.

Also after researching camcorders, now wonder if I would have been better
off with the other kind of camcorder with the little tapes as they do use
firewire which supposedly keeps it digital throughout without messing up the
quality and also they have better imagers I think in terms of better quality
video. Sorry so long.

Thanks,
