-=PCTechTalk=- Signature in the from line

I note that many of you use only your first name and many others use an 
alias and another e-mail account.  I used to have another account but just 
have not set it up again.  I would like to make a change so that only my 
first name shows in the from line.  Is it as simple as going to tools, 
accounts, properties, and deleting my last name?  Or with Widows XP will I 
mess something up so that I will no longer be recognized as the 
administrator?  I have looked in the help files but I just don't find 
exactly what I am looking for.
