-=PCTechTalk=- Re: what is a MAC address

all ethernet type NIC's (Network InterfaceCards) are assigned a MAC
address by the manufacturer.

It is known as a Hardware Address, normally 6 groups of 2 hex digits.
example: 06:2B:F5:8A:C3:FF

good for about 281,474,976,710,656 unique addresses.

the TCP/IP protocol makes use of the hardware MAC address.

cable modem providers log your modems MAC address so they know you is
using which modem on their system and which modem to send your data to.

MAC = Media Access Control

Try Google for more information, just enter "MAC address definition"
