Don,

I have set it to notify, but how will I know which ones are important? This
was some kind of security update that has messed me up. There are so many of
the darn things.

I don't know how to fix the current problem, but to prevent it happening
again set your autoupates tp notify only or turn it off.
 
This should be done anyway to prevent unwanted updates (like IE 7, right
now) from installing automatically.
