1) Are your adapters stereo (I assume they are)
sometimes if you  wiggle them a bit it makes the
connection work (silly thing but sometimes that is it
especially if the tape is mono and only one channel is
being picked up). Also 
2) are you using line in (which as a rule you should)
however the "mike in" is more "sensitive" and may
pickup the sound better in the case of your brother's
tape.
3) I assume from your discussion that the tape may be
mono? is that the case?
