Hi,

I've used AVG free for 2 years now and noticed that
when it updates the virus signatures it does not
require a restart - but when it updates the email
scanner and or the scanner engine program itself that
it does require a restart. I update manually - I check
each morning and usually there is one. The greying of
the icon occurs on my machine when the virus database
is out of date (happens when I am not on-line for
awhile) or when I have shut down one of the scan
features in the AVG control centre.
