you can get to safe mode...just bring it up once the the windows display 
comes on and begin by pressing the f8 key UNTIL the dos menu comes 
up..safemode is listed and you go from there.

My final bit of standard advice: On a Windows XP or 2000
machine, every scan, no matter what the program, is WORTHLESS
unless you are performing it in Safe Mode, as the Administrator.
