Sandy

Since you say it connects to the AOl and to the 800 number without a
problem tech support should have been able to fix this in short order.

Assuming you have the modem sound on so you can hear what's happening
you should hear:
-click and dialtone yes
-the number being dialed correct number verified ALL three numbers with
Earthlink.
-possibly a ring or 2 depends on how fast the isp's modems answer the line.
-standard modem answer tone. At the point the phone line connection is
complete. YEs I hear this
-modem negotiation tones, this is where you'll hear a melodic sequence
of tones while the modems test the phone connection and decide what
speed they will communicate at and the protocol they will use. yes I hear my
computer making these sounds
-then the login happens, this is when the ISP's system defines what
login protocol will be used and asks for your login info to make sure
your a valid customer. This probably where the problem is. Earthlink
used different protocols at different dial-in numbers and some login
software just wouldn't work at some locations for me, yet I could call
another town and connect just fine.

Here is where you should have 'logging' turned on for your dialer. The
log file will show the whole sequence of events, what was received and
what was sent. It's likely hanging up right after the 'CHAP' or other
protocol login. Tech support should be able to resolve this either by
reprogramming their end or by providing you with the correct dialer. How do I
turno n the logging? Or where do I find this?

Of course there are the other usual items to confirm:
-correct logon username (including if you need a domain name included) this is
correct, double checked it
-correct logon password I doubled checked this as well
thank you for your help!
Good luck
