-=PCTechTalk=- Re: router?

Hi Sandy
Are you going to leave the connection to the ISP the same (Dial up) or are you
going to get cable?

If I remember correctly, in a previous email you stated that your Mom had
Windows 98 OS. In any
event, please go to Belarc. com (http://belarc.com/free_download.html) and
download their program on
each computer in the house. This program will tell you everything you have in
the computer, both
hardware and software. This program comes in handy when we are discussing
things like what is in the
computer.

I do not remember or saw what puter (desktop or laptop) you are using not its
OS. What are they?

There are a couple of different network configurations to consider and the
selection will be based
upon what you want to do and how you want to do it (what ever "it" is).

I described, in general, one of the layouts previously.
One computer will be connected to the phone lines and have the dial up modem
and this computer is
called the Gateway (not to be confused with the computer manufacture Gateway).
The other computer
will be connected to the Gateway via a Cat 5 cable or through a router or a
switch. This
configuration can get a little more hairy if you are going to go wireless, but
this will be
addressed later when we find out how you want to operate. I do not know if they
make a wireless
switch cheap enough for home use. The advantage here is cost. This set up will
have to use the
internet connection sharing option in the OS's. The disadvantage (in my
opinion) is that the Gateway
computer must be on in order for the other puters to be able to access the
internet.

The next configuration is where you have an external modem connected to the
phone lines and then a
router connected to the external modem (Two pieces of equipment here) and then
computers connected
to the router. I would not recommend using a switch in this setup
configuration. Again if you want
wireless, this configuration can get a little hairy then if all are connected
by cables. The
advantage here is that each computer can access the internet independently of
the others. The
disadvantage is the cost, maintenance, and you must be knowledgeable on the set
up and requirements
of each piece of equipment and updates and how they work together.

Do you have a computer? If so, if it is not a network printer, then it must be
hooked up to one of
the computers and the printer sharing option in the OS's must be set up. Also,
for the other puter
to use the printer, the computer the printer is connected to must be on for
both general
configurations.

Your equipment can have a determining factor in which layout (above) would work
best for you.

Need to know what computers you have (desktop, laptop), what OS they are? Do
you want wireless, even
if you do or do not have a laptop? I believe you previously mentioned you would
be in the same room.
If you have a laptop, will that be used in a different room from time to time,
and if so how far
away is that room. If you do not want wireless in this case, that means you
have to string a cable
(permanently or temporarily) from the connection device to the other location.
The cable will have
to be run through the walls or laid down on the floor or stapled to the ceiling
to go to the other
location. With wireless, for one reason or another, the signals may not reach
each other. In this
case, an access point must be installed (usually on the ceiling) somewhere in
between to relay
signals back and forth to each device. Hope this paragraph is clear.

In some of this, I may be able to help you, in others I may not, but I am sure
some in here can be
of a help.

Life is what happens in between plans.
