Hi
Anytime you do a defrag or scan disk, regardless of the OS, you should shut
everything (well as much as possible) down except sys tray and explorer. On
my 98 there are a couple of others that should not be shut down.

The biggest offenders to running scan disk and defrag are the screen savers
and anti virus programs. If they go active they can interrupt scan disk and
defrag stopping them.

I have a program called "End it all" that when activated shuts down most
everything. It was published in a mag a few years ago, I believe it was PC
mag, but not sure about that.

Life is what happens in between plans.
