Digests normally contain 25 posts and the size of the digest is 
controlled by the size of each of those posts.  When posters fail to 
trim their posts, it inflates the size of the download, sometimes making 
it 2-3 times the normal size.

That said, the digests rarely approach 1MB in size.  So, if you're 
having a problem with downloading using a cable connection, it may be 
time to look elsewhere for the problem, as I doubt a 1MB file download 
would choke a 3.0Mbps connection.
