ok - now this is getting rediculous -
I clicked on the exe, and I got a pop up square saying "archive is not
supported".
that's as far as I got with trying to install it.

Cris-

The download speed is dependent of every bit of the connection between
your system and the server holding the file, including the speed of the
server. If the server is slow or overwhelmed, then your download will
be slow or slower than normal.

That file: OOo_1.1.2_win32Intel_install.zip is the correct one if you
have an unZip utility. If not, then download the
OOo_1.1.2_win32Intel_install.exe instead. It will take longer but you
won't have to bother with unzipping the file.

I tried the multiple install on XP the other day and it works. Each
time a different user opens OOo, they are asked for their personal info,
so each user gets a customized version. But you have to be familiar
with working at the command prompt to do this. If not, there is another
way to make OOo available to everyone:

Log on to the system using an account with admin rights. Install OOo
but don't fill out any of the personal info when asked, just click Next
and move on. Once OOo is installed, go to the Documents and Settings
folder and find the user that installed OOo. Open the Start Menu>
Programs>OpenOffice.org 1.1.? folder and create a shortcut to the
executable for OOo and copy it to the same location under the All Users
folder. If you want the Startup icon in everyone's taskbar, go to the
Startup folder under Programs and make a short cut to
OpenOffice.org1.1.0 and paste it in the Startup folder under All Users.

Working at the command prompt can be a pain and if you're not familiar
with it, well nigh useless.
