-=PCTechTalk=- Re: odd icon on desktop

Files with the ~*.* are temporary files, that are created "temporarily" while
using specific apps. MS Office makes them, as well as other apps. However, for
them to appear on your desktop, chances are you have something "installed" on
your desktop, which shouldn't be. When installing apps, they should be
installed in alternate directories... eitehr under C:\windows\programs files or
something similar. They can be safely removed. If you find the source app
creating them, you should uninstall the app and reinstall it in a different
directory.

Subject: -=PCTechTalk=- odd icon on desktop

  Hello,
I'm new to this group, and I hope you all answer software questions as well
as hardware ones.

I wonder if anyone else has had this weird thing occur (I have Windows XP
Pro).

Occasionally, after doing some unknown task, an odd item appears on my
desktop. It has a generic icon under which is the tilde ~. Under Properties it
has Type: File, Origin: Desktop, Size: 244 kb (maybe that's the size of the
icon itself).

When I double click on it, no program is slated to open it, of course, so I
just delete it. But I am curious to know if others have had this. I haven't
identified any pattern, except that I believe it happens after I have read some
document on the web.

  Thanks.

  Liz
