Are any of these machines LapTops ?
laptops are notorious for strange problems like this when the power
saver features are enabled because they power-down things to conserve
energy, if the ethernet card gets shut-down you loose the connection.
Sometime the processor goes to sleep, with out it running the connection
won't be maintained.

Assumming this is not the case a few things to check are:
-file sharing enabled on any device you want to share, and configured
correctly.

When you can see the other machine in the network neighborhood to
search/find computers and enter the name of the other computer and see
if it is found. Windows XP has some strange problems where it can SEE
something this way but it won't show up in network neighborhood.

All machines should be using the same workgroup name else they won't be
seen in networkneighborhood.
