Gratchie,
Then we have ourselves a bonafide (what the heck does that word mean,
anyway?) problem here. If it works in Linux, then the mouse electronics,
the ball (if it uses one) and its cable are fine. That leaves only the
files the operating system (Windows, in this case) is using to communicate
with it.
When you uninstalled the mouse drivers, did you reboot before installing
the new ones you downloaded from the net? When Windows is told to uninstall
a driver or driver set, it doesn't remove the files from the hard drive.
Instead, it un-registers the files by telling Device Manager to stop using
them. They are then supposed to be cleared from the system's memory (RAM),
but again, NOT from the hard drive. A subsequent reboot then allows the
registry to clear those items from its Hardware section. My thinking is
that perhaps Windows didn't truly REPLACE the driver files if it found them
to be right where they were supposed to be (as indicated by the
still-present registry keys). Instead, Windows checks to see if the files
are the same name, size & version and skips the replacement procedure if
they are. To complicate things, a newer driver set might include an older
version of a file that didn't need updating when they revised the rest of
the set. Unfortunately, even a corrupted driver file (the most likely
problem here) can fall through the cracks this way on occasion.
Then again, if you DID reboot between uninstalling and reinstalling,
we're gonna have to dig a LOT deeper to find the problem. :O(
Peace,
G Man
