Spider... just realized now you said you have a Dell. It may be a little
tricky with the Dell. I'm not saying this for sure, but Dell, Gateway,
and other companies use their own proprietary cases and components. So,
while everything may seem to be compatable, you might find out that your
Dell tower doesn't fit a full sized ATX board. It might only have room
for the micro-ATX boards. You want to keep this in mind.
Another thing, which happened to me many years ago, I had a Gateway. I
decided to upgrade a bunch of stuff in it. This resulted in needing a
new and higher wattage power supply. I bought the power supply and it
didn't fit in the Gateway tower cause of its damn proprietary design.
So, I needed to get a new tower. I bought one and then the old mobo
didn't fit in it. At that point, I just bought all new components. But,
this is what I mean.
Anyway...
For an Athlon 64 FX-55 CPU, I like the Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe, which by the
way sapports SLI.
If you want to go the Pentium route, I like the Asus P5AD2-E Premium.
Do a Google search on each of these models for detailed reviews. They're
both nice boards, but too much to get into. If you have specific
questions about these or others, just ask.
Also... we mentioned Intel vs. AMD. You're going to get varying degrees
of opinions. Both companies make VERY GOOD and VERY RELIABLE processors.
You're already familiar with Intel, but many people tend to shiver a bit
when AMD is brought up. Even though I myself am more of a Pentium fan, I
think if more people were willing to give AMD a fair shot, AMD would
blow Intel out of the water. That's just my opinion. And, I can pull the
article somewhere if asked here, but I believe I read that the current
fastest processor on the market is one of the AMD models.
To make a long story short, if you're big into games, you should go with
AMD. AMD wins in that arena.
Let me know if you have any other questions.
