Oh. I like your explanation better. ;) I wasn't even thinking of mentioning matched pairs. Hmm, that reminds me... did you look up that motherboard Gman? I've seen at least one mobo with 4 mem slots that used the 1st and 3rd as a pair. And some mobo's have problems with double sided memory cards. OK, I better get some sleep before I fall asleep at the keyboard. ;) -----Original Message----- From: pctechtalk-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:pctechtalk-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Gman Sent: Monday, December 01, 2008 11:55 PM To: pctechtalk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: -=PCTechTalk=- Re: memory question For dual channel memory pairs, it's possible to get a close enough match using different brands, but they would need to be manufactured using the same memory chips (some use the same chip suppliers). Personally, I don't recommend it at all. Buy the memory packaged as an already matched pair. And if you're running two different pairs, try to use the same memory for all of them (two sets of pairs of the same make/model). I know that's not what we did to give you dual channel the other month, but it seemed to have worked. Now, with the slow down issue you recently reported, I'm not so sure it worked as well as I had hoped, which is why I recently suggested that you remove the two 256MB sticks and just run the two 1GB sticks by themselves.
