Ok Cris, I'm not certain what is going on here but
let's try this.
1) there is a utility that comes with the various
versions of windows that allows you to find your ip
address. If you go to windows help and type in IP you
should get the relevant information. Like I said on
win98se winipcfg in the start/run will work but the
winxp command is different but it is there - someone
else on the list mentioned it but I'm sure going to
help will point you in the right direction.
2) secondly the rather commercial site at
http://www.ipchicken.com/ does give the same
information to me that the windows program does so I'm
not sure what is going on there. The ip address should
look like this only of course yours will be different:
216.209.163.20 Remember this number as a rule changes
if your internet provider assigns you a new addy every
time you connect, some don't but most do,...
nonetheless the first part eg. 216.206.16* will be the
same normally but the rest usually changes. If you use
your own IP configue utility that comes with windows
(see above) you should get more info from it on your
own IP address and can then compare it to the
ipchicken.com information.
3) Also if you are running a firewall like ZoneAlarm
or whatever you will notice that your IP address is in
there a lot since your internet provider is constantly
pinging you to observe your online status among other
things. Since my internet provider is constantly
changing my ip address even when I am on line I notice
that the last set of digits is always changing. If you
are using Zone Alarm just go to the Alerts&Log file
and take a peak at your logs. This will also show you
whether you have a static or dynamic ip address.
4)and finally it is your ip addy that you want is it
or are you interested in your ports (like port 25
which is usually used for email but not always).
